McAlester, Okla.--The 10K overall male winner of the Oct. 3 Second Annual Patriot 5K/10K run at McAlester Army Ammunition Plant (MCAAP) was also last year’s winner, McAlester’s Vincent Detel, 29. He shaved off almost three minutes from last year by finishing in 40:13.
Finishing second overall in the 10K was Kent Kelley with 41:51 followed by James Lane at 44:50, both from McAlester.
The overall 10K female winner was Angella Lee of Ada who finished in 50:39 followed by Gina Clayton, McAlester, at 52:56 and Kim Rose, Stigler, at 53:27.
The morning started off foggy and chilly, but by the 9 a.m. race time, the fog had burned off leaving behind a sunny day for the 56 runners. Runners were signaled to begin by the sound of the ammunition plant’s ceremonial cannon going off. The event was sponsored by the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Division of the ammunition plant.
All of the participants were reminded of the ammunition plant’s mission when they ran past the 21,500 pound inert green and yellow Massive Ordnance Burst bomb which has been on static display for years in front of the headquarters building. MCAAP is the nation’s premier bomb making facility.
Edie Price, Stigler, said she enjoyed the deer and the foliage but what she enjoyed the most about the 10K was that the track was flat. Kim Rose, also of Stigler, echoed her sentiments and said she plans on returning next year.
For children who didn’t run but still had all that energy to burn there were several inflatable active games including rock climbing. And post-race food was available in the form of hamburgers, chips, drinks.
Medals were presented to the top three winners in all age categories with the presentations taking place on a traditional Olympic style medal platform.
